Writing an Effective Cover Letter for a Medical Assistant Job

As is often said, the first impression is the last impression. If you are applying for a job, be it any kind, an effective covering letter accompanying your resume will play a major role in creating an impaction and lasting impression that may also give you an edge well over other candidates.
Especially when applying for medical assistant jobs, it is important to remember that most other prospects for the job will be high school diploma holders, not having any other formal education or training hence making them equally qualified. Thus, one of the most crucial things that will help to set you apart from all the others will be a well drafted covering letter.
There are approximately 500,000 medical assistants employed in the U.S currently and the medical assistant job industry is estimated to grow at a rate of 35 % up until 2018.
If you wish to be hired as a medical assistant and be part of this growing industry, make sure to follow these basic tips while drafting your covering letter for a job application at a hospital or medical practitioner’s office.
  • Follow a prescribed pattern for the letter. Start with your name, address and contact information. Move on to subject, salutation, body and finally a conclusion. Letters written in random order are confusing and lack appeal.
  • Highlight your work experience and accomplishments. This is extremely crucial and will help to distinguish you from other applicants.
  • Clarify your skill sets- Administrative or clinical
  • Make sure to mention what you are enclosing, under the sub heading ‘Enclosed’ or ‘Enclosures’. This will include your mark sheets, transcripts etc.
  • Try to keep the length of the letter restricted to one page.
  • Always end the letter with ‘Sincerely’. Stay clear from words like ‘Truly’, ‘With regards’ etc. They do not appear professional.
There are thousands of medical assistant jobs and many more applicants vying for them. If you wish to race ahead and secure one, be sure to have a well written covering letter. Some employers may not even open the resume if they are unimpressed with the covering letter. On the other hand those impressed with the letter, will give importance to your resume and even ignore small in-capabilities.
